How To Download Unreal Engine

In this tutorial you will learn how to download and install Unreal Engine 4 on your computer.

The process if fairly simple, but it does require few additional steps before you can use Unreal Engine world/level editor.

Follow these 6 steps to download and install Unreal Engine 4.

Go to Unreal Engine 4 website and click on "Get Unreal" icon. This will take you to a log-in page. You have to sign-up/register to Epic Games Community before you can have access to use Unreal Engine.

If you do not have an account, go ahead and sign up. Registration is free and it is required to download and use UE4.

Before you can download Unreal Engine, you have to download and install Unreal Engine Launcher.

  1. This is also called Epic Game Launcher.

  2. Unreal Engine Launcher is very important. It is a portal through which you will be able to download and launch any Unreal Engine version you want.

  3. You will also be able to create new projects, manage your projects and download Marketplace Content.

  4. Once you signed up and logged in, click on "Get Unreal Engine" icon button to download "Unreal Engine/Epic Games Launcher" installer.

1. Get Unreal - Unreal Engine Launcher

Choose Game Developers tab and click Proceed to Download:. Next choose to download for Windows or Mac:. And you'll get EpicInstaller file like this:.

Run EpicInstaller file on your computer:. Let it install into the default C: directory:.

  1. After installation, you should now have Epic Games Launcher shortcut on your desktop.

  2. Double click on the icon to open it:. You can also use Windows Start icon and search for Epic Game Launcher:.

    You will find "Unreal Engine/Epic Games Launcher" inside the default installation directory in: "C:\Program Files \Epic Games \Launcher \Engine \Binaries \Win64 \EpicGamesLauncher.exe".

    • After opening up the Epic Game Launcher you'll have to sign-in using the same log-in you created earlier.

    • First click over to Unreal Engine then Library tab:.

    Click on the plus icon to add Unreal Engine:. Then use the drop down menu to choose Unreal Engine version you want to download and install:.

  3. Keep the install location default and let it download and install:. This will take a bit of time but once it is done, you now will have Unreal Engine editor on your computer, ready to use. Click any of the Launch icons to open up Unreal Engine 4.

  4. Important: in order to start Unreal Engine 4 editor you will have to create a new project, open existing project or open a project you downloaded from Learn or Marketplace section.

6. Open Unreal Engine Editor

Follow this tutorial to create your very first project in order to open up Unreal Engine editor.

If you have an account, sign in to the Launcher and continue to the next section.

If you don't have an account, click Sign Up to create one. You can sign up for an Epic Games account with your email, or with a supported social media or gaming platform account.

You can also proceed without creating an account by clicking Sign In Later. However, you will not be able to download or use Unreal Engine without an account.

Your account information is processed in accordance with the Epic Games Privacy Policy.

After you've created your account, Sign In to the Launcher.

4. Open Unreal Engine Launcher

Now that you've signed in to the Epic Games Launcher, you're ready to install Unreal Engine.

  1. Click the Unreal Engine tab inside the Epic Games Launcher, then click the Install Engine button.

  2. (Optional) Click the Browse button to change the install path.

  3. Click the Options button to select which Engine components you want to install. This is where you select components such as:

    • platform support

    • starter content

    • debug symbols

    • engine source code

    You can add or remove components from an installed version of Unreal Engine at any time, by clicking the drop-down arrow next to the Launch button for that version, then selecting Options.

    Before you install Unreal Engine, make sure you have enough disk space. Requirements vary depending on the engine components you select. The Options screen will show you how much space you need for the installer download, as well as the engine itself.

    After you finish selecting the engine components you need, click the Apply button.

  4. Click the Install button and wait for the installation to complete. Depending on your system specifications and Internet connection speed, downloading and installing Unreal Engine can take between 10 to 40 minutes, sometimes longer.

You can have multiple versions of Unreal Engine installed. To add more versions, in the Library tab, click the Add (+) button next to ENGINE VERSIONS, then select the Engine version you want to install from the drop-down and click Install.

5. Download Unreal Engine

After the install completes, click the Launch button to open Unreal Engine.

Congratulations! You are now ready to start using Unreal Engine.
