Samsung Np350v5c Bios Update

  • Hi. I have been reading this forum since I bought my Samsnung NP-N510 in 2009, but this is my first post.

    I rearly use my N510 anymore cause it runs really slow with Windows7. But recently I updated it to win8 and it worked pretty good…for 20 minutes. I tried to update the BIOS and windows crashed, leaving the BIOS update unfinished. After this the computer was dead, only the led lights were on. I knew I had messed up the update.

    Here’s where I’m at: After spending “some” time searching google, the problem is this. I need to know does Samsung suppport BIOS recovery? If it does, I could flash my bios via USB pen drive with phoenix Crisis Recovery Disk Tool. And if it does support, WHAT IS THE keyboard combo to press, so that the USB will boot? It is not any of these: WinKey+B, Fn+Esc, Fn+F, Fn+S, ctrl+home F-buttons, Home, or arrows.

    This is what Pheonix says about their BIOS:
    Even though Phoenix do have a recovery procedure for recovering badly flashed BIOS,
    A) makers also have the ability to disable this feature.
    B) I believe makers also have the option to choose which keys start the Crisis recovery Process on their own machines.

    I have also tried these methods: removing bios battery, resetting the RTC pins… and read almost all posts on this forum.

    Here are two posts that keep my hopes up that this will work on my Samsung:

    #1)
    Phoenix BIOS Recovery
    First, you need to get the Crisis Recovery Disk Tool.
    Once you have the program, run it, (I checked the “Format” option – I couldn’t get it to work without doing that, results may and probably will vary), and you will now have a floppy that you will be able to use to recover the BIOS. But you’re not done quite yet.
    There is a file on the disk called BIOS.WPH which needs to be replaced with the file for your specific BIOS (mine was EL80107B.ROM, files will vary). The file needs to be put on the floppy in place of the 512 kb WPH file, and you MUST rename your BIOS file (i.e. EL80107B.ROM) to BIOS.WPH. Changing the extension is necessary.
    Remove the battery from the laptop, and unplug the AC power cord. Then plug in your USB floppy drive (with the Crisis Recovery Disk in it and ready to go). Next, With the AC still unplugged, press and hold the Fn(Function) and B buttons. While still holding them, plug the AC power in, then press the power button.
    The system should power on, but there should be no LEDs lit up, and the fan should not slow down like it normally does. If that is not what happens, and you get LEDs that light up, and the fan slows like normal, unplug the AC power and try using the Win and B keys instead. Once the system has booted into the BIOS recovery mode, the floppy light will flash as it reads the BIOS file from the disk. You can then release the Fn+B keys (or Win+B ). After a minute or two, the floppy light will stop flashing.
    DO NOT shut the computer off, as the process is only half complete. The system is now flashing the BIOS.
    After the floppy light goes off, leave the computer on for two or three minutes; more if you want to be sure, and if the system does not reboot itself (mine did not), unplug the AC power. I let mine go for five minutes or so and pulled the plug (the power button would not shut the system off no matter how long I held it; I suspect this is normal). Five minutes should be plenty; however long you wait, try to be patient. My five minutes of waiting seemed to take forever, but paid off. Better to be without the laptop an extra minute or two than two weeks while it’s back to wherever it came from having a new chip installed or the old chip re-flashed. Plug the AC power back into the laptop and fire it up.
    If all goes well, you’ll have made a very expensive paperweight into something useful again.
    It seems this works for most newer models of laptops with Phoenix BIOSes (from what I’ve seen). Forums I’ve read have said that it may be either Fn+B or Win+B to boot into BIOS recovery mode…

    I’ve finally found how to start crisis recovery on Samsung r60. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    There is no key combination at all.!!
    What you need to do is bypass the ‘switch’ below RTC reset switch near to the memory slot while powering on.
    Process:
    Open the memory door,
    Find the place where there is RTC Reset switch (close to the debug socket). (If you switch this switch system resets);
    Find the other switch below this one.
    Attach your usb floppy attached to the usb port with crisis recovery.
    Connect power source.
    While switching the unnamed switch push the power button.
    Device starts to read on floppy.
    System recovered !!!!!

    Hi, i’ve same problem, so i need to know more information. 1 – Where you found bios file? on Samsung site there’s only .exe file. 2 – On motherboard i’ve found rtc reset, with 2 point, what do you mean when write “bypass”? 3 – you have used crysis recovery disk, or you have simply put bios file into floppy disk? thanks 🙂

    Hopefully I’ll never have to do this… BUT as you need to NOW… here is a result I got from Googling Phoenix bios recovery…

    bypass means to use a small flat bladed screwdriver and try to touch BOTH solder pads so that it is ‘switched’ on.

    Hi,thank you for answer. I can’t bios for r60plus. On Samsung site i can find only .exe that i can’t explode with winrar. Do you know where i can find it or do you have the file?

Understanding the Samsung Update Software program

This part explains how the official Samsung Update Software checks the latest BIOS version and how it downloads the latest file. This example describes a Samsung Ultrabook, model NP530U3B-A01IT.

The Update Software is a Windows-only program that downloads the latest BIOS version information from Samsung, it compares it against the currently installed version and allows the user to update the firmware.

The tool performs an HTTP request to the following URL:

http://sbuservice.samsungmobile.com/BUWebServiceProc.asmx/GetContents?platformID=XK&PartNumber=AAAA

At the time of writing (February, 2016), the following content is returned:

It can be seen that the most important parameter is platformID which is composed by the last letters of the BIOS version suitable for the computer. Parameter PartNumberalways assumes the value AAAA.

From the information displayed above, we can see that the latest version is 13XK. The full URL of the most recent BIOS version is:

Replicating the steps manually

The first thing to do is to identify the current BIOS version by issuing sudo dmidecode -t0:

In this case the platform ID is XK.

Then it's easy to figure out what is the latest BIOS version. It can be seen from the URL of the EXE file. Run the following command:

What remains to be tested

Further investigation is necessary to determine if the EXE file can be run in DOS mode by using a FreeDOS environment. Alternatively, it should be possible to extract the ROM file contained in the EXE. The ROM file can be flashed by using the AMI Flasher utility for Linux.
